The Ministry of Justice has published an ad-hoc statistical release on receipts received in the employment tribunal between July and September 2013, following the introduction of fees on 29 July 2013. The key findings include:
• The quarterly employment tribunal receipts for July to September 2013 were around 40,000. This is in line with historical quarterly trends.
• The employment tribunals received an average of 17,000 receipts per month between January and May 2013.
• In June 2013, there were 25,000 receipts and 17,000 receipts in July 2013. The sudden increase in June could be a result of claimants lodging their ET1s before the introduction of fees on 29 July 2013.
• In August 2013 there were 7,000 receipts and 14,000 in September 2013.
However, these figures should be treated with caution as the introduction of fees may have caused a time delay for claims to be entered on the HMCTS case management system since claims are only entered once the fee has been paid or remission has been granted. The numbers are therefore likely to be revised upwards in the following months.
The Ministry of Justice has stressed that the figures published should be treated as provisional and that revisions are to be expected in the official December Tribunals Statistics Quarterly Publications on 12 December 2013.
