Employment Law Update: Parental leave: implementation of the EU directive in Northern Ireland

The Parental Leave (EU Directive) (Maternity and Parental Leave) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2013 (SR 2013/25) and the Parental Leave (EU Directive) (Flexible Working) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2013 (SR 2013/26) have been made and will come into force on 8 March 2013. They will implement aspects of the revised Parental Leave Directive (2010/18/EU) by:

Increasing a qualifying employee's parental leave entitlement from 13 weeks to 18 weeks in respect of each child.

Extending to agency workers the right to request a contractual variation on return to work following a period of parental leave.

The same changes will be made in Great Britain, at the same time, by the Parental Leave (EU Directive) Regulations 2013 (see Legal update, Parental leave: implementation of the EU directive).
