Electronic fit notes (eMed) are now being rolled out across GP practices, which should be completed by early 2013. There are no changes to the issuing of fit notes and once printed, signed and given to the patient, an electronic fit note is designed to be used in the same way as a handwritten fit note.
Handwritten notes may still be issued, principally by hospital doctors, doctors conducting home visits, and GPs with older IT systems.
The original plans which would have allowed Doctors to email the new electronic fit notes to employers have unfortunateloy been scrapped but once printed by GPS, the new electronic fit notes will contain a system generated barcode which is expected to reduce issues with forged notes.
So what do you think? Will electronic fit notes have any impact on managing staff absence?
